Well-being in Sport
Supporting the Whole Athlete at West Point Soccer Club
We believe that sport is more than just competition. It’s a powerful vehicle for building life skills, character, and community. That’s why we’re committed to fostering a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment where every child can thrive, both on and off the field.
Introducing wellbeing programs into grassroots sport, particularly junior soccer, plays a vital role in the holistic development of young athletes. While physical fitness and skill development are key, so too is supporting players’ mental, emotional, and social well-being. We aim to create a space where kids feel encouraged, connected, and empowered to grow not just as players, but as people.
Inclusivity
We strive to make soccer fun and accessible for all.
According to George Washington University, 9 out of 10 children say “fun” is the main reason they play sport. When sport is done well, it creates opportunities to build inclusive, respectful, and functional communities.
Unfortunately, a “win at all costs” mindset can damage the playing experience for others. That’s why we’re focused on fostering an environment where every child feels welcome, valued, and encouraged to participate, regardless of background or ability.
Let’s all work together to make sport FUN!
Respect
Junior sport can be unpredictable and energetic and that’s part of the magic!
Coaches at West Point are committed to teaching children not only how to play the game, but also how to:
We help define positive behaviours, guide players in understanding their impact on others, and provide a nurturing environment where learning and laughter go hand in hand.
Growth Mindset
Every child who joins our club deserves the opportunity to develop both in sport-specific skills and in life skills.
We understand the pressures that come with competition. However, we prioritise the well-being and growth of every individual. We aim to develop resilient, confident players who can manage challenges, bounce back from setbacks, and stay engaged in the long run.
By nurturing a growth mindset, we support kids in building confidence, leadership, and a lifelong love for the game.
Community Spirit
A strong, positive club culture enhances every aspect of the sporting experience.
West Point recognises that the benefits of participating in a team sport extend far beyond the scoreboard. We are proud to:
Sadly, only 3 in 10 of Australia’s most disadvantaged kids participate in sport outside of school, compared to nearly 8 in 10 of their advantaged peers.
We believe sport should be accessible for all and we work hard to remove financial and social barriers so every child has the chance to play.
Grassroots sports clubs like ours are the heartbeat of local communities. They provide a space for unity, belonging, and shared purpose. Here’s what we do to strengthen our sense of community:
Social Events: We host BBQs, family days, and social gatherings to bring players, parents, and volunteers together.
Mentorship: We pair experienced players with younger teammates to support learning, skill development, and camaraderie.
Celebrate Achievements: Whether it’s effort, teamwork, or milestones, we recognise all kinds of success.
Champion Diversity: We promote inclusion, respect, and equality, ensuring that every child feels seen and supported.
Foster Communication: We encourage open conversations between players, coaches, and families.
Lead by Example: Our coaches and volunteers model positive behaviour and uphold the values we believe in.
Create Traditions: From game-day chants to club celebrations, shared experiences foster a sense of pride and identity.
Keep It Fun: Above all, we prioritise enjoyment because happy players are motivated players.
We want every child to love the game before they learn to play the game. Our coaching philosophy emphasises:
We focus on helping kids:
